Running an exhaust brake through a slipping torque converter heats the automatic, and most converters pass just 10 to 80 percent of the retarding force through the fluid coupling. The Torq/UnLoc tells the converter clutch to stay locked whenever the BD exhaust brake is on.
That lets up to 100 percent of the braking force reach the wheels in 3rd and 4th, with little or no slip to heat the fluid. It can also stop the ECM from locking the converter when doing so would pull rpm below the best torque range, or when road speed would make it cycle in and out.
